GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Speech and Language Terms

ASSESSMENT

An assessment can be performed in any area(s) of communication that is of concern. An assessment will consist of both standardized tests and non-standardized measures (e.g., parent report, checklists, teacher's reports etc.)

ARTICULATION

Children may have an articulation disorder if they present with difficulties producing a particular sound (e.g., "wion" for "lion") because they substitute /w/ for /l/.

RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE SKILLS

A child with comprehension difficulties may answer questions incorrectly, have difficulties understanding what they are hearing or reading, and may have trouble following directions, especially multiple step directions.

EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE SKILLS

A child may have an expressive language disorder if they present with challenges in using words to gain attention, request items, describe objects, or tell you about an experience they have had.  They may also have difficulty using grammatical structures appropriately (e.g., "We goed to the park" for "We went to the park.")

FLUENCY

A child may have a fluency disorder if they repeat parts of words and whole words, if they prolong parts of words while speaking, or if their airflow is interrupted while attempting to speak.

ORAL AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE SKILLS

A child with a communication disorder might have difficulty organizing their thoughts, both while speaking, and when writing their responses to questions and/or summarizing information.

PHONOLOGY

A child may have a disorder in their phonological skills if they have patterns of sound errors (e.g., may say "dut" for "duck") because they produce sounds that are made in the back of the mouth in the front of their mouth.  Children with phonological disorders are typically difficult to understand, even for caregivers that are familiar with the child.

FREQUENTY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN I GET A SAME-DAY APPOINTMENT?

Depending on the day, you may be able to get a same-day appointment.  I will always try to be accommodating to your scheduling needs.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER MY VISIT?

At this time, Nurtured Speech does not bill insurance directly, as this would take away from time that children can be worked with directly. Depending on which insurance you have, you may be able to submit your receipts for reimbursement, and I would be more than happy to provide you with the documentation you would need in order to be reimbursed.

DO YOU OFFER FINANCING OPTIONS?

At this time, financing options are not available.

CAN YOU TALK TO MY CHILD'S DOCTOR AND/OR TEACHER?

If you wish for me to collaborate with your child's doctor, care team, and/or teacher, a HIPAA form can be signed which would allow me to talk with whomever you would like to me to communicate with.
